Outreach Ministries on the Lake Victoria Islands
It's a long way to Sigulu Island. And even farther to Lolui Island in eastern Lake Victoria.
Closer to Kenya than they are the Uganda mainland, they are part of the Buvuma chain of islands.
Rev. Gabriel Ojambo is the overseer of this area and has led a dedicated team of church planters who have started quite a few churches on the islands.
He commented, "The island churches are a challenge. It's a long way there by boat, and transport is difficult and costly."
"But the people there need the Lord, and this area is very underreached."
The Africa Gospel Church has about 20 churches in the area, and about 30 pastors and evangelists who are in our pastoral training / church planting training programmes.
AGC Uganda 2011 AGM and Elections Held
The Africa Gospel Church (Uganda) held its first Annual General Meeting since receiving its full registration in Kampala in September 2011.
Here are some of those who were in attendance.
Masese Children's Ministries Keep Growing
When you live in an area with a lot of young familes, there is no stopping the growth of the children's ministries!
Ask Rev. David Dikusooka, Senior Pastor of the AGC in Masese, Jinja.
They are overflowing with children and have had to train additional children's ministry workers in the church.
"We see it as a change to show love in our community," David says. "These children are a gift to us from God, so we treat them that way. And they know when someone really cares for them, or not."
The church does a lot with children. There are special activitites for them during the week, and when the schools are on a holiday break, things are always happening.
"Our church is right next to a large school, so we can take advantage of their sports field for games. The kids like that."
Community Health Empowerment Ministry Expands
The CHE ministry (Community Health Empowerment) is expanding in the AGC Uganda, says Mrs. Jennipher Wasirimba, the church's coordinator for Community Health and Development
"We started our first CHE pilot project in 2009, with 22 trainees from 3 areas of the church," Jennipher says. "We met for a total of 20 days of training spread out over a year. The trainees came from Buvuma Island, Masese / Jinja, Kyunga, and Namayingo. I was very impressed with their commitment."
After the initial training, Jennipher spent the next year coaching and advising the 10 training teams that had formed on how to begin to implement a CHE ministry in their place.
New Church / Chapel Completed at Kikongo Village
A new, multi-purpose building was recently completed at Kikongo Primary School on Buvuma Island.
The building will serve as a chapel and auditorium for Kikongo School, and also as a church sanctuary for Kikongo Africa Gospel Church.
The enrollment at the school has increased about 30% over the past few years, and the church has grown as well. This new building will be a big help in meeting the needs of both ministries.
Rev. David Dikhosooka, Area Overseer helped oversee the construction and is quite pleased with the results.
